Burnout is a state of chronic stress that leads to:
- physical and emotional exhaustion
- cynicism and detachment
- feelings of ineffectiveness and lack of accomplishment
What are the signs of burnout?
Signs of physical and emotional exhaustion:
✓ Chronic fatigue (lack of energy, sense of dread for what lies ahead on any given day)
✓ Loss of appetite
✓ Forgetfulness/Impaired concentration and attention (lack of focus)
✓ Increased illness due to weakened immune system
✓ Physical symptoms may include chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, fainting and headaches.
Signs of cynicism and detachment:
✓ Loss of enjoyment including times spent with family and friends
✓ Isolation (resistance to socialise)
✓ Detachment (general sense of feeling disconnected from others and the environment)
Signs of ineffectiveness and lack of accomplishment:
✓ Increased irritability
✓ Lack of productivity and poor performance
✓ Feelings of apathy and hopelessness (“What’s the point?”)
